On Frank Wilderson’s book, Afropessimism: Whither the Black Psyche in this Antiblack World?

Presenter: Dr. Jaye Austin Williams is Asst. Professor and C. Graydon and Mary E. Rogers Faculty Fellow in Africana Studies at Bucknell University. She worked in the Professional Theatre for thirty years as an acclaimed director, playwright, actor, and consultant, and holds a B.S. degree in Theatre from Skidmore College; an MFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and a Ph.D. with an emphasis in Critical Theory from the joint doctoral program in Drama and Theatre at UC Irvine and UC San Diego.

Dr. Williams’s scholarship is situated at the intersections of Critical Black Studies, Performance Studies (drama, theatre and cinema), Black Queer and Black Feminist Studies. Among her forthcoming (2021) publications are, “The Always Already of Antiblackness: An Interview” (Edition Assemblage); “Alienated Flesh at the Place of Trauma and Death: Unearthing the Black (Queered) Un-Human in Suzan-Lori Parks’ One-Character Short Play, Pickling” (Palgrave); and her own play, A Not So Quiet Nocturne (Routledge). Previous publications include, “Radical Black Drama-as-Theory: The Black Feminist Dramatic on the Protracted Event-Horizon” (Johns Hopkins) and “On the Table: Crumbs of Freedom and Fugitivity–a Twenty-first Century (re) reading of [Lynn Nottage’s] Crumbs from the Table of Joy” (Routledge). She is presently at work on two book projects: her Monograph entitled, Staging (Within) Violence: Toward a Black Radical Dramaturgy, and Kia Corthron in Concert: Selected Plays and Critical Engagements.

Advanced reservation is required. There will be 3 CE’s offered for LP’s, LCAT’s, LMSW’s, LCSW’s. Proof of attendance provided for all others. It is the responsibility of the participant seeking CE credits to comply with requirements. Upon completion, a certificate of attendance will be emailed to all participants.

This event is free for IEA students and IEA members. $50 for all others. Please be advised that no refunds are offered after registration is complete. This event will not be recorded.
